Singer 600 Heavy Duty Sewing Machine – Many Stitches Picture(s) and Description:

Up for auction from a Connecticut estate sale is is a very strong and heavy duty Singer 600 Touch & Sew sewing machine made in the USA (Elizabeth. New Jersey) around 1963. When you hear the expression "They don't make them like they used to" I bet "they" are referring to sewing machines of this era before someone invented plastic gears. This machine is built like a tank, all metal drive train and all metal gears; there is no rubber belt at all, just direct drive from the motor. Many sewers consider these machine to be unbreakable and pretty much unstoppable, and they are often described as industrial strength. I included a picture of the upper drive mechanism to show how overbuilt these machines are. To demonstrate how strong this machine is I included a picture of sewing through 6 layers of denim.

This model was the top of the line machine for Singer back in 1963 and features many built in stitches plus five included "Fashion Disc" cams for additional stitches. This model also can use any of the other Fashion Discs available. Besides the standard straight stitch and zig zag functions this model includes six additional built in stitches selectable by a lever. I included a page that shows the six stitches; the page also shows the five included Fashion Disc stitches. This is a very versatile machine that has many features of today's machines, but is built to last forever. It takes standard needles (15x1 type 2020 size 9 18), and standard "Touch & Sew" bobbins, top loaded. The needle holder has room for two needles and all of the stitches can be used with double needles for added effect. For double stitches this model uses two single needles and two thread spools (the tension system has two discs for multiple threads). I included a picture of just some of the stitches available, I would need about a yard of material to sample all of the stitches and variations.

If you haven't used a Touch & Sew machine before you will like the bobbin winding. The bobbin is wound from the needle thread as the bobbin sits in its normal position in the bobbin case. When you are done you are ready to sew ( you don't have to bring the bobbin thread up). The bobbins also have markings for amount of thread left on the bobbin, plus the bobbins unscrew so you can get rid of unwanted thread without having to unspool it. This model uses slant shank presser feet (see below for included items).
